GMCH Performs First Successful Liver Transplant, Marking Historic Milestone for Assam’s Healthcare Sector
Assam’s healthcare sector has achieved a major milestone with the successful completion of the first-ever liver transplant at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The complex surgical procedure, which lasted approximately 16 hours, marks a significant advancement in the state’s public healthcare system.
Health Minister Ashok Singhal announced the achievement, stating that the procedure was the first of its kind at a government hospital in Assam. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Senthil Kumar. According to the minister, it was also the first successful liver transplant in the government healthcare sector of the Northeast.
The achievement is expected to improve access to advanced medical treatment for patients in Assam, reducing the need to travel outside the state for specialised care. The state government is continuing its efforts to make complex medical treatments more accessible and affordable for patients, the minister said.
Meanwhile, Singhal also stated that services at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital would be temporarily shifted to MMC from November 16.
The minister also commented on the increase in MBBS course fees, saying that it was a government decision. He further remarked that fees at some pre-primary schools were currently higher than the MBBS fees.
The successful liver transplant at GMCH is being regarded as a landmark achievement for Assam’s healthcare system, raising hopes of expanding access to advanced medical procedures within the state.
