Double tremors jolt Assam, neighbouring areas early morning, severe damages reported

Massive double jolts of earthquake shook Assam in the early morning of 28th April. The first tremor was felt at 7:52 am, followed by another jolt at about 7.54 am.

An aftershock was felt at around 8.02 am.
As per initial data provided by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), the earthquake was recorded at 6.7 on the Richter Scale. The epicentre was at Dhekiajuli, in Sonitpur district.

In Guwahati city as well as in other districts, many houses were left with cracks. A luxurious apartment in Guwahati, Shoppers’ Point at Fancy Bazaar and the Vivanta Hotel reported extensive damages. Video reports also showed a newly constructed house in Nagaon getting slightly tilted to one side.

Further, landslide was seen at a hill in Udalguri distrct.

Another strange phenomenon has occured in many places of Assam, whereby muddy water is flowing out of cracks that have occured in the earth. Places include Tezpur, Dhekiajuli and others.

Two persons have been severely injured at Kalapahar and Bhetapara area of Guwahati and are admitted to Hayat and Dispur Hospitals respectively.

In another tragic case a 70 year old died of injury when a wall fell on him during the earthquake. The incident occured at Dhekiajuli.

News of cracks being formed in the earth continue to be reported from across the state. Further details to be added later.
