The Indian government has increased the export duty on petrol from ₹0.50 to ₹2.50 per litre while reducing the duty on diesel exports from ₹16 to ₹8.50 per litre.
According to a government order issued on Thursday, the revised duties came into effect on October 16.
The changes are part of the government’s regular review of fuel export duties in response to fluctuations in international crude oil and petroleum product prices.
The government introduced windfall taxes on fuel exports in July 2022 amid rising global energy prices. After withdrawing them in 2024, the taxes were reintroduced in March 2026 following a surge in crude oil prices.
The duties are reviewed every two weeks. The latest order did not specify why the petrol duty was increased while the diesel duty was reduced.
