Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain celebrated her birthday in the most memorable way possible, winning a gold medal for India at the Asian Games 2026.

Lovlina defeated China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 in the women’s 75kg final to clinch the gold medal and bring another major honour to Indian boxing.
The final was held on October 2, Lovlina’s birthday, making the victory even more special. The Assam boxer delivered a composed performance throughout the bout as all five judges awarded the contest in her favour.
Second Indian Woman Boxer to Win Asian Games Gold
With this victory, Lovlina became only the second Indian woman boxer to win an Asian Games gold medal. The first Indian woman boxer to achieve the feat was Mary Kom, who won gold in the 51kg category at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.
Lovlina has now joined Mary Kom in an elite list of Indian women boxers to stand on top of the podium at the Asian Games.
Historic Back-to-Back Asian Games Finals
Lovlina also created another piece of history with her campaign in 2026.
After winning a silver medal in the 75kg category at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Lovlina returned to the final in 2026.
She thus became the first Indian woman boxer to reach the final at two consecutive editions of the Asian Games.
Her journey to the final was not easy. Lovlina defeated South Korea’s Seong Suyeon 5-0 in the quarterfinal before edging past Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova 3-2 in a closely contested semifinal.
A Golden Birthday for Assam’s Boxing Star
Born on October 2, 1997, Lovlina turned 29 on the day of the final. Instead of an ordinary birthday celebration, she gave herself, her family, Assam and the nation a golden gift.
The Asian Games gold adds another significant achievement to Lovlina’s decorated career, which includes an Olympic bronze medal and a World Championship gold.
For Assam, the victory is another proud chapter in Lovlina Borgohain’s remarkable sporting journey. On her birthday, she stepped into the ring for India—and walked out with gold.
