Baghjan villagers hit streets demanding compensation

Guwahati, July 24 (NKTV): Hundreds of people in Baghjan Village in Tinsukia District of Assam took to the street on Saturday demanding compensation for victims of Fire blowout that occurred due to an explosion in an Oil well Owned Oil India Limited in June last year. The protesters claim that even after One year of the tragedy , large Number of victims are yet to be compensated by the company. The Baghjan Fire victims have been protesting time to time seeking full compensation. Notably, OIL has been compensating the victims in a Phase-Wise manner and many are still on the wait list.

The 159 day long inferno had left thousands Homeless, destroyed hundreds of acres of paddy Fields leaving it unproductive for future use and ponds without Fishes. The Police and the CRPF resorted to lathi –charge and used pump action shot Gun to disperse the crowd. Reportedly, three protesters got injured in the clash. An Oil India Limited Gas well, the BGR 5, faced a blowout which spewed hydrocarbons across a huge radius raining the adjoining Villages in Baghjan with associated condensate.
