Awareness on Rare Bone Marrow Transplant, Blood Cancer held in Guwahati

Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad conducted Blood cancer Survivors meet at Guwahati to raise awareness about blood cancers and to emphasise the fact that ‘Blood cancers are not only completely curable but also these patients after successful treatment can lead a completely normal life like us’. This patient survivors meet aims to encourage people to come forward and support those who are affected by blood cancer.” said Dr. Ganesh Jaishetwar, Senior Hematologist & BMT specialist.

“Blood cancer, also known as hematologic cancer, is a type of cancer that affects the blood, bone marrow, or lymphatic system. It includes various types of cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Blood cancer can affect people of any age, gender, or race. Blood cancers constitute 8.2% of all cancers and the incidence of blood cancers in India is 5.5 cases per 1 lac population per year. Going by this, about 80,000 new blood cancers are diagnosed per year and one new blood cancer is diagnosed every 7 seconds in India and every 20 seconds, somebody with blood cancer is dying in India.”

An 18 year old from patient Guwahati who was suffering with life threatening bone marrow failure- Severe Aplastic anemia and underwent emergency HLA gene half matched BMT ( Bone marrow transplant) from his fathers stem cells for life threatening Aplstic anemia and now is cured of his deadly disease, proves this fact.

Many cured blood cancer patients and many successful BMT patients joined this Survivors meet at Guwahati. Dr Ganesh further added that Dept of Hematology & BMT Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda had many pioneering milestones to its credit like – 1). India’s first successful double Haplo-identical stem cell transplant, 2). Haplo- identical transplant for the most advanced age of 67 Years, 3). Worlds first single international donor stem cells being used for two brothers for BMT, 4). India’s first successful Ex Vivo T deplete Haplo-identical BMT for adult patients. Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda has conducted more than 300 successful BMTs over last 8 years.”
