Assam moving from ‘Tea to Tech’, says Himanta Biswa Sarma as govt pushes balanced growth

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the state is witnessing broad-based and balanced economic growth, with the government focusing on both traditional sectors such as tea and emerging areas including technology and tourism to create employment opportunities and reduce migration.

In a post on social media platform X, Sarma said Assam’s development strategy aims to ensure equal attention to all sectors so that economic progress reaches people at the grassroots level.

“Assam’s growth trajectory is broad based and balanced. From tea to technology to tourism, we are advancing every sector with equal focus to drive grassroots transformation and create opportunities for our people,” the Chief Minister said while sharing a campaign graphic featuring the slogan ‘Tea to Tech’.

The campaign message highlighted the government’s vision of creating “a new Assam where nobody has to leave their motherland in search of opportunities”, with a focus on employment generation and industrial growth.

The statement comes as the BJP-led state government has been promoting Assam as an emerging investment destination through various industrial and infrastructure initiatives.

Over the past few years, Assam has sought to attract investments in sectors such as electronics, semiconductors, renewable energy, food processing, logistics and information technology, while continuing to strengthen its established tea industry.

The government has also expanded its focus on tourism by developing religious, eco-tourism and heritage destinations, alongside improving connectivity through highways, bridges, airports and railway infrastructure.

Sarma has repeatedly said Assam is undergoing a structural economic transformation driven by policy reforms, improved ease of doing business and investor-friendly measures.

The state government has maintained that these initiatives are aimed at generating employment, encouraging entrepreneurship and enabling young people to pursue career opportunities within Assam rather than moving elsewhere.

The Chief Minister has frequently used the phrase ‘Tea to Tech’ to represent the state’s transition from a traditional plantation-based economy towards one driven by technology, manufacturing, innovation and modern services.
