Trump Refuses to Call Iran Conflict a ‘War’, Signals Progress in Negotiations with Tehran

12

US President Donald Trump has once again made headlines with his remarks on the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. Trump has refused to describe Washington’s military campaign against Tehran as a war, while indicating that negotiations between the two countries are moving in a positive direction.

Speaking about the ongoing discussions, Trump said, “Negotiations with Iran are going very well. We are producing more oil now than we were before the war.”

Explaining his position further, the US President stated, “This is not a war. Over the last five months, nobody has been injured and nobody has died. You cannot call something a war when there have been no casualties. This is not a war.”

Notably, following the Republican Party’s poor performance in the US midterm elections, Trump had identified the Iran conflict as one of the reasons behind the party’s electoral setback. US Vice President JD Vance had also made similar remarks, although his interpretation differed from that of Trump.

Trump had earlier made it clear that he had no regrets about his decision to launch military operations against Iran, adding that he would make the same decision again if necessary.

In contrast, Vice President JD Vance had questioned the justification for the military campaign. Several other senior Republican leaders had also reportedly expressed concerns over the issue.

Against this backdrop, Trump’s latest remarks have sparked fresh political debate over the US approach towards Iran. His indication that negotiations are progressing positively has also raised expectations of a possible diplomatic understanding between Washington and Tehran.
