Ghanakanta Gogoi Dies in Police Encounter in Sivasagar

Encounter takes place at 3:10 AM near Rongmon Dhaba in Phulpanichiga | Three rounds fired by police

Ghanakanta Gogoi, the accused in the Bilas Inn hotel case, died in a police encounter in Sivasagar in the early hours of Wednesday.

The incident took place at around 3:10 AM near Rongmon Dhaba in Phulpanichiga, Sivasagar.

According to the information received, Gogoi allegedly attacked police personnel and attempted to escape while in police custody. A scuffle reportedly broke out between him and the police, following which the police opened fire.

Police reportedly fired three rounds. One bullet hit Ghanakanta Gogoi in the chest, leading to his death. Another bullet struck the police vehicle, while the third bullet injured Sub-Inspector Debashish Sharma.

SI Debashish Sharma, attached to Sivasagar Town Police Station, sustained a gunshot injury to his right leg.

It may be mentioned that Gogoi was brought to Sivasagar in connection with Case No. 108/24 registered at Sivasagar Police Station. On Tuesday, Sivasagar Police arrested him from Guwahati Central Jail.

Following his arrest, he was sent to judicial custody and was subsequently taken to Sivasagar on Tuesday evening.
