Indian Navy Launches Daring Operation Against Somali Pirates, Rescues Iranian Trawler with 20 Crew Members

The Indian Navy has successfully rescued an Iranian fishing trawler hijacked by Somali pirates in the Arabian Sea, along with 20 crew members held captive aboard the vessel. After a 48-hour-long operation, the Navy regained control of the trawler. The Indian Air Force also played a crucial role in the mission.

The operation was conducted nearly 3,000 kilometres from the Mumbai coast and has been praised by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Iranian fishing trawler, named ‘Azini’, was hijacked by around 12 armed Somali pirates on October 29 in the waters between the towns of Bandar Beyla and Hafun, off the northeastern coast of Somalia.

At the time of the hijacking, the vessel was carrying 21 Iranian crew members and two Somali security personnel. The incident raised serious concerns about the safety of those on board.

Following reports of the hijacking, the Maritime Security Centre in the Indian Ocean region issued an alert.

There were concerns that the pirates might use the trawler as a ‘mother ship’ to launch attacks on other commercial vessels. Under this strategy, pirates use a larger vessel as a base to launch smaller boats for attacking other ships.

Taking note of the seriousness of the situation, the Indian Navy launched an operation. A warship and specialised maritime surveillance aircraft were deployed to track the hijacked vessel.

After prolonged surveillance, the Navy successfully located the Azini.

Subsequently, Indian Marine Commandos were strategically deployed into the sea from an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft. In a coordinated operation involving the armed forces, the pirates were overpowered and control of the trawler was regained.

A total of 20 crew members held aboard the vessel were rescued. No casualties or injuries were reported during the operation.

Following the successful mission, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force for their efforts. He said the achievement demonstrated the capabilities of India’s armed forces and reaffirmed that the Navy remains prepared to tackle threats at sea.

He also reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining maritime security and stability in the Indian Ocean region.

Meanwhile, the renewed activities of Somali pirates have raised concerns in recent months. At least six commercial vessel hijackings were reported between April and August.

According to experts, the resurgence of piracy in the Somali region is linked, among other factors, to the Iran-Israel conflict.

Pirates have recently carried out several attacks on cargo vessels in the Gulf of Aden and adjoining areas of the Arabian Sea. The fishing trawler is also suspected to have been hijacked for use as a base to launch attacks on larger commercial ships.

In September, a pirate attack involving a tanker named MT Honour 25 reportedly resulted in the deaths of five crew members.

Against this backdrop, the successful rescue of the Iranian trawler Azini is being viewed as a significant development in strengthening the safety and security of commercial shipping in the Indian Ocean.
