The Government of Tripura has partnered with the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), Kolkata, to develop the Tripura Film and Television Institute (TFTI) in Agartala into a world-class centre for film, television and audio-visual media education.

The initiative aims to nurture local creative talent, strengthen professional media education and expand career opportunities for young people across the North-East.

SRFTI, an autonomous institution under the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, will provide academic and technical expertise to support the development of TFTI. It will also prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for planning and developing the institute’s proposed permanent campus.

The collaboration was discussed at a meeting held on October 23, 2026, attended by Dr K. K. Nirala, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Kiran Gitte, Secretary of Information and Cultural Affairs, Government of Tripura; and Santosh Ajmera, Vice-Chancellor of SRFTI, along with officials and faculty members from both institutions.

Emphasising the need for innovation in film and media education, Dr Nirala said emerging technologies and growing opportunities in the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) sector require institutions to adopt forward-looking approaches. He stressed that TFTI should explore innovative teaching methods rather than simply replicate existing curricula.

Gitte said the state government was committed to supporting the aspirations of Tripura’s youth and connecting them with opportunities in the global creative economy. He also highlighted the importance of promoting local stories that can reach national and international audiences.

Ajmera reaffirmed SRFTI’s commitment to the partnership, stating that the institute’s academic experience and technical expertise would support the development of TFTI into a world-class institution.

TFTI currently offers two one-year postgraduate certificate programmes in Film and Video Editing and Screen Acting. It has also conducted specialised short-term training programmes, with four batches completing certificate courses to date.

The partnership marks a significant step towards strengthening professional film and television education in Tripura, creating opportunities for aspiring filmmakers and media professionals, and promoting the creative potential of the North-East.
