Another dispute over a PG and rental accommodation has surfaced in Guwahati. A violent altercation reportedly took place between the owner of a PG and a young female tenant at a paying guest accommodation at House No. 28, Debdaru Path, Hatigaon. The matter has now reached Dispur Police Station.

According to the PG owner, the young woman had initially been a good tenant. However, after staying at the PG for nearly a year, differences reportedly arose over her returning late at night.

The PG owner alleged that the tenant insisted on being allowed to enter the premises after 11:30 pm. However, the owner said she had clearly informed the tenants beforehand that the gate would not be opened after 10:30 pm.

The owner further stated that she runs the PG as a woman living alone while her husband stays away, and therefore maintains certain strict rules keeping security concerns in mind.

According to the PG management, the situation escalated after the tenant was asked to vacate the room following repeated complaints of disturbances.

The PG authorities alleged that the young woman physically assaulted a woman associated with the PG management and also tore her clothes. They further alleged that a 13-year-old child who went to protect his mother was also physically assaulted.

On the other hand, the tenant, who is reportedly known as a lawyer, has also accused the PG management of assaulting her.

Both sides have filed separate complaints against each other at Dispur Police Station. Based on the complaints, police arranged medical examinations of the complainants from both sides and recorded their statements.

The incident has now raised questions over the conflict between PG rules and tenants’ rights. What began as a dispute over entry into the PG after 10:30 pm eventually escalated into a physical confrontation and reached the police station.
