Congress Ends Alliance With Akhil Gogoi’s Raijor Dal

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has formally ended all political alliance ties with Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal, citing repeated violations of alliance ethics and coalition norms.

The decision, effective immediately, was taken following the direction of APCC President and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi. APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Ramanna Baruah issued the official organisational circular.

According to the circular, Congress had entered into an electoral alliance with several regional and Left parties, including Raijor Dal, ahead of the previous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to present a united opposition front against communal forces.

However, Congress alleged that Raijor Dal leadership repeatedly engaged in “malicious propaganda” and “character assassination” against the party, while also making “baseless and derogatory” remarks against leaders of other alliance partners.

Congress said such conduct repeatedly undermined the basic principles and decorum of the opposition alliance, making it no longer viable to continue political ties with Raijor Dal.

The development comes days after the APCC sharply criticised remarks made by Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi against Congress and warned him against acting as a “government agent.”

Despite ending the alliance, Congress said it would continue to raise public issues and hold the BJP government accountable for what it described as “anti-people actions, unjust policies and misgovernance.”

In the May 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the BJP won 82 of the state’s 126 seats, while Congress secured 19. The BPF and Assam Gana Parishad won 10 seats each, while Raijor Dal and AIUDF secured two seats each. The All India Trinamool Congress won one seat.
