US Carries Out First Known Strike on Iranian Territory Since July

The United States carried out a strike on two Iranian launch systems on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, according to Reuters, citing a US official.

The official said US forces targeted the launchers after members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were observed preparing them to fire rockets carrying sea mines into the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

“I can confirm that earlier today US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island,” the US official told Reuters.

The strike marks the first known US attack on Iranian territory since late July, according to the report.

Larak Island is located south of Hormuz Island and east of Qeshm Island. It lies approximately 1,100 kilometres southeast of Tehran.

The latest attack comes amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways for global energy supplies.
