Assam Police CID Cyber Cell Cracks Down on Fake Flood Relief Donation Drives & Privacy Violations

The CID Cyber Cell of Assam Police has intensified its vigil against fraudulent flood relief fundraising campaigns, putting multiple individual and organizational accounts under strict surveillance for potential financial embezzlement and misuse.

Investigating agencies are closely tracking funds raised via UPI IDs and QR codes across digital platforms. Around 40 social media accounts are currently under the scanner for raising money in the name of flood relief without proper authorization or transparency. Authorities have issued a stern warning that anyone caught embezzling flood relief funds will face immediate arrest and legal prosecution under cybercrime laws.

Guidelines for Donors and Content Creators

The police have urged the public to verify the credibility and credentials of any organization or individual before making online contributions, advising citizens to donate only through trusted, verified organizations.

Alongside financial fraud, the Assam Police issued a special advisory to content creators and digital media regarding the coverage of flood-affected minors:

• Protect Children’s Privacy: Do not disclose or leak the identities of children affected by the floods.
• Exercise Caution with Visual Content: Refrain from sharing unblurred photos or videos of flood-affected children, as public exposure increases the risk of cybercrime and exploitation.
• Ethical Reporting: Ensure child rights and privacy are fully protected during flood coverage.

The CID’s crackdown aims to curb financial fraud disguised as charity while ensuring ethical standards are maintained during ongoing flood relief efforts across the state.
