Congress Discusses Nagaon By-Poll Candidate; Debabrata Saikia Rules Himself Out

A crucial meeting of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) was held at Rajiv Bhawan on Sunday. The meeting was attended by APCC President Gaurav Gogoi along with senior office-bearers of the party.

The discussion primarily focused on the upcoming by-election to the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Several senior Congress leaders have reportedly expressed their interest in contesting the by-poll. The party is likely to finalize the candidate’s name during the ongoing deliberations.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia clarified that he will not contest the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election.

Speaking to reporters, Saikia said, “I had never intended to contest a Lok Sabha election. This time too, the question of applying for a ticket or contesting does not arise.”

He further stated that it would be better for Nagaon to have a local representative and added, “I do not want to make a parachute landing into the constituency.”

Saikia also remarked that even if the party offers him the candidature, he is not interested in going to the Lok Sabha.

The Congress leader also reacted to the issue of rising prices and inflation. MLA Joy Prakash Das also expressed his views on the issue of price rise.
