The first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly commenced today with the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected MLAs.
The session began at 9:30 AM. All 126 MLAs, including those from the ruling and opposition benches, took oath on the very first day. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also took oath as a member of the Assembly.
The four-day special session is expected to witness the introduction and discussion of several important bills.
In a significant development, Ranjeet Kumar Das was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly. Pro-tem Speaker Chandramohan Patowary formally announced his name. Ranjeet Kumar Das subsequently assumed the charge of the Speaker.
The smooth conduct of the first day’s proceedings has set a positive tone for the new Assembly.
