The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized assets worth ₹65.60 lakh belonging to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Deputy Chief Engineer Hemchandra Bora and his wife Gayatri Saikia in connection with a disproportionate assets case.
The couple came under investigation after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case against Hemchandra Bora for alleged irregularities during his service. The CBI had earlier filed a chargesheet against both husband and wife.
During its probe, the ED’s Guwahati branch found that between 2016 and 2021, the couple had acquired assets that were 73.75% more than their known sources of income. Gayatri Saikia is a teacher at Bhaskar Vidyapith.
The couple maintained seven bank accounts, but surprisingly conducted very minimal digital transactions — only ₹1.36 lakh through ATM and UPI. They allegedly used cash for household expenses while keeping their government salaries untouched in the accounts to project a legitimate source for purchasing properties.
The ED’s investigation has exposed a well-planned modus operandi used by the couple to convert ill-gotten wealth into immovable assets.
This case highlights the central agencies’ continued action against corrupt officials and their family members in the region.
